Back in April we decided to try a paid fly fishing clinic. We had been getting several inquiries about clinics and classes and decided to put together a day long program and see how it did. The response was overwhelmingly positive. After tweaking a few things from the April clinic we put together a program that will leave you with either a very strong base foundation if you are new to the sport or with gained knowledge in several different areas of the sport.
The clinic is a full day (8am-5pm) at the Valle Crucis Community Park. The Park has a classroom that allows us to start the day going over basic gear and what you can get without breaking the bank. Next, we'll learn how to read a stream and how to figure out where trout are going to be sitting in a river. We'll go over entomology (local bugs), and how to imitate them using fly tying materials. One of the most important things after learning how to read a stream and which flies to use, is how to tie a proper knot. We'll show you the knots you need to know to ensure when you do hook into that personal best fish, you don't break him off. After lunch (which is provided), we'll move outside and do a casting lesson. Once everyone has a feel for the rod, we'll move into the guided portion of the clinic. The guide is there to help you put the knowledge you learned in the classroom in a real life fishing situation.
Spots are limited to 14 to ensure that every person is going to get the one on one attention they want. A tweak from the spring clinic we are making is ensuring that each individual is paired up with a guide all day long. This means that you'll have someone with you all day that you can ask questions to and have them instruct you (especially during the fly tying portion).
This clinic is meant to help beginner anglers or experienced anglers with all aspects of fly fishing. At the end of the day we hope you leave having gained knowledge, caught some fish, have a new fly box with flies you've tied yourself, and being a business endorsed by Trout Unlimited, a 1 year free membership to that organization to help protect the sport we all love.
