It's time for our annual spring fly fishing clinic! This year the clinic will be held at the Valle Crucis Community Park on April 7th! Cost is $275/person and includes lunch and all gear needed to participate! There are only 12 spots available, so make sure to register early! We teach on a 1 guide: 2 guests ratio, so there will be plenty of one on one interaction. Below is a sample schedule of what your day will include.
8:00am: Arrive at park- Check in and introduce yourself to other participants.
8:30am: Welcome/Intro- A quick welcome and introduction to the day from Patrick & Meredith before diving into the gear lesson.
8:45am: Basic gear essentials- Going over what you need on the stream & what you don't. Determining the best gear for you and the streams you are fishing.
9:15am: How to read a stream and Line Manipulation- Some simple tools that have a big impact. Knowing how to read the water allows you to cast your fly perfectly to that big brown. Go over some skills such as mending, setting the hook, and roll casting that are a staple in our guide arsenal.
10:15am: Entomology- Choosing the perfect fly can be frustrating as there are thousands of patterns available. By observing your surroundings and knowing what is hatching, you will be able to make an informed decision that will lead to big fish.
11:15am: Knot tying/ rod rigging- Learning a few solid knots to have in your arsenal is important in case you ever get in a situation with a short leader or broken tippet.
12:00pm: Lunch- Catering from Jersey Mikes sub shop
1:00pm: Casting Lessons- Put all your equipment knowledge from the morning to use during our casting lessons! Presentation is vital on the river- you will have the opportunity to cast several of our top performance rods that have stood the test of guide season.
2:00pm: Trip- Put your skills to the test with a guided trip for the duration of the afternoon with the Due South Guides! The perfect time to ask questions, learn different techniques, and net a couple of nice fish!
5:00pm: Closing-Everyone will reconvene from their trips to say goodbye.
*Subject to change due to weather. If weather is too poor to fish, Due South will hold the classroom portion during the morning and guest will be refunded for afternoon session.
"Since I had no experience fly fishing, I thought the class provided a good mix of classroom training and hands-on training (casting + fishing). Everyone fro the Due South crew was friendly and knowledgeable, and that translated to a great experience for me." -M. Decker
"I thought the event as a whole was awesome. Loved the packet of places to fish, presentation lineup, and folder as a whole, I would have to say that all the guides that helped out were awesome as well, and did a great job." -G. Sasser
